We cherish receiving updates from the families of our patients, though we understand that the news isn’t always joyful. Today, we share a story that deeply touches our hearts. On what was meant to be a day of celebration, our beloved Kelly tragically passed away while we were preparing this story.
Meeting Nelly
We first met Nelly around this time last year. She was referred to our Ophthalmology Service late one evening with acute onset glaucoma. Glaucoma is a serious eye condition where increased pressure from fluid buildup damages the optic nerve, leading to extreme pain and potentially severe vision loss or blindness if not treated promptly.
Nelly’s Treatment
In May of last year, our Ophthalmologist, Heidi, performed an eye removal surgery to alleviate Nelly’s pain and prevent further complications. Nelly faced her surgery and recovery with incredible bravery and resilience. Her devoted family supported her throughout, ensuring she lived a comfortable and joyful life despite her struggles.
A Bittersweet Birthday
On the day we intended to celebrate Nelly’s birthday and share her inspiring journey, we received the heartbreaking news of her passing. Nelly’s family reached out to us, expressing their deep sorrow and sharing how much she meant to them. They described her as a loving, gentle, and courageous companion who brought immense joy to their lives.

While we are saddened by Nelly’s passing, we choose to remember the joy and love she shared with her family.
