Lola was turning 5 today, and she woke up with a skip in her step. She had always loved her birthdays—treats, toys, and lots of attention. But as the morning sun rose higher, the house was unusually quiet. There were no birthday banners, no extra treats waiting by her bowl.
Confused, Lola wandered around, her tail wagging slower with each passing minute. She peeked into every room, hoping to find her family waiting with a surprise. But the day went on, and no one seemed to notice it was her special day.
By evening, Lola sat by the window, her big brown eyes watching the sky turn shades of orange and pink. She didn’t understand why no one had celebrated with her. Her heart felt a little heavy, but she kept her tail up, hoping that maybe, just maybe, a late surprise would come.
As the first stars twinkled in the sky, Lola curled up in her favorite spot, whispering to herself, “Maybe next year will be even better.”
