Today is my birthday. The sun streamed through the curtains, casting a golden glow on the room as I opened my eyes, expecting warmth, love, and excitement to fill the air. But the house was silent. No one came rushing into my room with joyful shouts of “Happy Birthday!” No hugs, no smiles. Just… nothing.
I wandered downstairs, hoping to catch my family preparing a surprise or perhaps sneaking around with birthday decorations. But the kitchen was as it always was—mom reading her book, dad scrolling through his phone, and my sister engrossed in her tablet. I stood there, waiting, holding my breath. Maybe they were just playing along, waiting for the perfect moment.
Minutes passed. Then an hour. No one said a word.
“Good morning,” I said quietly, hoping to catch their attention.
“Morning,” mom replied, not looking up.
“Hey,” muttered my sister, her eyes never leaving the screen.
