Extended story:
Every Thursday, Nora ordered two coffees.
For months after her husband died, she continued doing it before quietly correcting herself.
The young barista never rushed her.
One rainy afternoon, a delivery arrived from the bakery across town. Inside was the little fruit cake Nora’s husband used to order for their anniversary.
Nora looked from the box to the barista.
“How did you know?”
“You told me last Thursday.”
Nora had forgotten mentioning the date. She hadn’t expected anyone else to remember it.
They cut the cake into small slices. A regular customer pulled up a chair. The delivery driver stayed for a cup of tea.
Before Nora left, the barista packed the remaining cake and handed her an umbrella.
The following Thursday, Nora arrived carrying an old photograph.
“This is him,” she said.
The barista cleared a space beside the coffee machine.
This time, Nora ordered one coffee without apologizing.
