Aisha had finished a long hospital shift and traveled straight to the hotel.
Her sister was getting married the following morning. All she wanted was a shower and a few hours of sleep.
The doorman directed her toward the service entrance.
“I have a room,” she explained.
He glanced at her scrubs.
The hotel manager arrived before Aisha had to repeat herself again.
Her booking was confirmed. Her sister had already left a welcome package at reception.
The doorman apologized.
Aisha accepted, too tired to prolong the exchange, but added, “Please ask the next person before deciding.”
Upstairs, she found a photograph inside the package: two little girls wearing curtains as wedding veils.
Underneath, her sister had written:
You made it through every hard day with me. I couldn’t do tomorrow without you.
Aisha sat on the bed and cried.
Then she set an alarm, hung up her dress, and finally rested.
