Ruby woke up on the morning of her 4th birthday, the sun streaming through the window and casting a warm glow over her favorite blanket. She leaped out of bed, tail wagging furiously, her heart brimming with excitement. Today was the day she would finally have a birthday party! Or so she thought.
As the hours rolled by, Ruby noticed that her family was moving through the day as if it were just another day. No decorations, no squeaky toys waiting for her, and no aroma of delicious treats wafting through the house. Ruby tilted her head in confusion, wondering if they had forgotten.
By lunchtime, her heart sank a little. The usual kibble was served, but where was the special birthday feast she had imagined? Feeling a bit down, Ruby settled into her favorite sunny spot on the floor, her big eyes watching the world go by outside.
Just as the sun began to set, her family gathered in the living room. Ruby perked up, hope flickering in her heart. They were holding something behind their backs! With a chorus of “Happy Birthday, Ruby!” they revealed a colorful bandana and a big, delicious dog-friendly cake, decorated with peanut butter icing and a single candle.
