The bus driver’s intense gaze softened. She let out a long breath, the rigid tension in her shoulders easing. “Right. Sorry, it’s been a long shift, and she was frantic looking for it before she caught her connecting line,” the driver explained, turning back toward the wheel as the bus slowed smoothly to a stop at a major transfer hub. “She’s actually scheduled to be at the community center downtown for an afternoon program. You two can drop it off there on your way.”
Stepping off the bus a few minutes later into the crisp afternoon air, the couple shared an amused smile. The ominous mystery of the key had vanished, replaced by the quiet satisfaction of a simple mix-up set right.
