The rain tapped a steady, frantic rhythm against the taxi’s windows, blurring the neon city lights outside. Inside the car, the air was thick with pure suspense. An experienced taxi driver sat up front, holding a small map and scanning it carefully. In the back seat, a young man leaned forward frantically, his voice sharp as he demanded, “It’s a private rental, please drive!”
Beside him sat a young woman with a tear-streaked face, her eyes wide with mounting panic. The driver slowly turned around from the front seat, her expression completely unimpressed and fiercely protective.
“Who told you to go there?” the driver asked, staring them down.
The young man snatched the map back in frustration. But the driver wasn’t about to be rushed—she had seen it all. She looked right past his panic and asked the young woman, “Have you stayed there before?”
The young woman shook her head, her voice trembling as she confessed that the driver had actually dropped off another woman at that exact same rental just last week, and that the passenger had asked the driver to wait.
“Why didn’t you wait?” the young woman blurted out, her voice cracking with dramatic tension.
The driver narrowed her eyes, delivering the punchline with absolute deadpan seriousness: “I did.”
The young couple froze. The terrifying mystery of the missing passenger hung heavily in the air until the driver continued, “She came out ten minutes later with a suitcase because she realized the Wi-Fi router was broken, walked back to her ex-boyfriend’s apartment, and asked him to pay for her hotel instead.”
The high-octane thriller vibe instantly evaporated. The young man slowly blinked, looked down at the map, and then at his girlfriend. The life-or-death emergency suddenly felt a lot less dramatic.
The young woman let out a heavy sigh, rubbing her temples. “So… we’re rushing across town in the middle of a thunderstorm because of a router?”
“Hey,” the young man muttered defensively, crossing his arms with a sheepish grin, “I just wanted to make sure we had good streaming quality for our movie night.”
The driver turned back around to the wheel, shaking her head with an amused smile. “That’ll be an extra twenty dollars for emotional damage and tech support,” she joked, shifting the car into gear. What started as a high-stakes midnight kidnapping scare ended with them laughing all the way to the electronics store.
