Daniel had walked past the locked cupboard for eleven years without asking what was inside.
When his stepfather finally opened it, Daniel expected tools or old paperwork.
Instead, he found a photograph.
Two boys stood shoulder to shoulder, grinning. One was his stepfather, Isaac.
The other was Daniel’s father.
“You knew each other?”
Behind him, his mother stopped in the doorway.
Isaac took the photograph but didn’t put it away.
“We grew up together.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You told me you met after Dad died.”
“We did,” she said. “We met again.”
The distinction meant nothing to him.
His father had died before Daniel could remember him. Isaac had entered their lives years later, a patient man who never insisted on being called Dad.
Now Daniel wondered how many ordinary family conversations had contained something nobody wanted him to know.
Isaac sat on the floor beside the cupboard.
“Your father was my best friend.”
“What happened?”
“We argued. About money. I thought there would be time to sort it out.”
There wasn’t.
When Isaac returned to town years later, he visited Daniel’s mother to apologize. Friendship came slowly. Marriage came much later.
“Why hide it?”
Isaac looked at the photograph.
“Because telling you about him meant telling you about the last thing I said to him.”
Daniel stayed angry for several days.
Then he appeared beside Isaac while he was washing the car.
“What was Dad like at my age?”
Isaac put down the sponge.
“Terrible at keeping secrets. Worse at football.”
Daniel almost smiled.
They sat on the front step until the water dried on the car.
The cupboard stayed unlocked after that.
By the end of the month, the photograph was hanging in the hallway.
