Tessa found the note tucked inside a wedding program.
Four words were written across it.
Tell them the reason.
She showed it to her husband.
Andrew’s expression changed before he could hide it.
“What reason?”
Near the entrance, his grandmother stood holding a gift box.
Andrew looked toward her.
Tessa followed his gaze.
“Why isn’t your father here?”
For months, Andrew had said his father disliked weddings, travel, and large gatherings. Tessa had accepted that the relationship was difficult.
Now his grandmother crossed the room.
“He wasn’t invited,” she said.
Andrew’s jaw tightened.
“This isn’t the time.”
“When will be?”
Tessa put down the program.
“I’d like to hear him.”
His father had lost the family home through reckless financial decisions. Andrew had spent years helping his mother recover.
He had chosen not to invite him because he wasn’t ready to share a happy day with someone whose apologies always seemed to require something in return.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Tessa asked.
“Because I didn’t want you trying to fix it.”
She looked at the note.
“And this?”
His grandmother lowered her eyes.
“I thought if everyone knew, they’d persuade him.”
Tessa handed the note back.
“You don’t get to turn our wedding into a vote.”
Andrew exhaled slowly.
They returned to the reception.
The next morning, he told Tessa the rest: the debts, the calls, the years of being asked to keep things quiet.
She listened.
Months later, Andrew chose to write to his father. He made no promises about reconciliation.
Before posting it, he showed Tessa.
“Does it sound cruel?”
She read it carefully.
“It sounds clear.”
He sealed the envelope himself.
