Evelyn hadn’t planned to come inside.
She thought she would leave the envelope at reception and go home before anyone asked questions.
But the man at the entrance wanted to know why she needed the chef. When she hesitated, his impatience grew.
Inside the envelope was a recipe written by Evelyn’s late husband.
Their son had learned it standing on a chair at the kitchen counter, flour covering his sleeves.
Father and son hadn’t spoken for eleven years.
The argument began over the restaurant. His father called it reckless. His son heard that he would never be good enough. Each waited for the other to make the first call.
Then there was no time left.
When the chef emerged and saw his mother, his expression changed.
She handed him the recipe.
“There’s something on the back.”
He turned it over.
His father had written notes about the restaurant: dishes he wanted to try, newspaper reviews he had collected, the date he hoped to visit.
At the bottom were four words.
Tell him I’m proud.
The chef read them twice.
“Why didn’t he call?”
Evelyn shook her head. “He kept putting it off.”
He held her for a long time.
A month later, he added a modest new dish to the menu. Beneath its name was a short dedication to his father.
Every Sunday, one table remained reserved for Evelyn.
