Extended story:
Emily’s interview had finished hours earlier. Then her car broke down, her phone battery dwindled, and the last bus disappeared from the departure board.
At home, her daughter was waiting with a neighbor.
Emily kept checking her watch as though the hands might offer a solution.
The cleaner brought water and sat beside her.
“Who needs to know you’re safe?”
That simple question broke through her panic.
Emily called her daughter first. Then she tried the taxi company again.
When the driver finally arrived, the receptionist explained that the cleaner had stayed beyond her shift to make sure Emily wasn’t left alone.
A week later, Emily returned carrying flowers.
“I got the job.”
The cleaner grinned. “Good. Now you can stop looking at that watch.”
Emily laughed, then asked when her shift ended.
This time, she had a working car.
“I thought you might like a lift home.”
