Story continuation
Arthur had promised his granddaughter he would come.
For three weeks, Lucy had been practicing swimming without holding the edge. Every evening, she called him with a report.
“Nearly the whole width today, Grandad.”
Now she wanted him to see.
Arthur arrived early, carrying the goggles she had left at his house. He was still getting used to walking with his prosthetic leg, and the unfamiliar poolside made him cautious.
Before he reached the chairs, a staff member stopped him.
Arthur tried to explain that he was there for a lesson—but he meant Lucy’s lesson, not his own.
The conversation grew louder. Children turned toward them. Arthur noticed Lucy among them and felt his face warm.
“I’m only here to watch my granddaughter.”
Then the second staff member approached.
“Lucy’s grandfather?”
Arthur nodded.
“She told us you were coming. There’s a chair waiting for you.”
The younger employee stepped back. What could have been settled with one question had become a scene.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I misunderstood.”
Arthur glanced toward the children.
“Then let’s leave it there.”
Lucy ran over just far enough to earn a gentle reminder to walk. She took the goggles from him and leaned close.
“You’re staying, aren’t you?”
“Wouldn’t miss it.”
Her first attempt ended halfway across. She reached for the instructor’s hand, frustrated.
Arthur waited until she looked toward him.
“You can try again.”
On her next attempt, she reached the other side.
She surfaced spluttering, then searched for his face.
“Did you see?”
“Every bit.”
After the lesson, Lucy sat beside him while her mother collected their things.
“Were you scared when you had to learn to walk again?”
Arthur considered the question.
“Yes.”
“Are you still?”
“Sometimes.”
She slipped her small hand into his.
“Then you can try again too.”
The following week, Arthur returned to watch. This time, the young employee greeted him by name and asked where he would be most comfortable sitting.
Arthur chose the same chair.
Lucy already knew where to look.
