What happens in the video
An elderly man in torn, worn clothing walks into an elegant hotel lobby. A staff member in a black suit approaches him and gestures during a tense exchange. The elderly man reaches into his clothing and brings out a small object, holding it up for the employee to see. Towards the end, another man wearing a blue suit approaches and speaks to him. The clip ends before the object’s significance or the outcome is revealed.
The story and an imagined continuation
The names, dialogue, backstory and ending below are fictional, inspired by the scene.
Thomas had walked past the hotel twice before finding the courage to enter.
Inside, the marble floor reflected chandeliers brighter than anything in his little rented room. He wiped his boots on the entrance mat and headed towards reception.
A staff member stepped into his path.
“Can I help you?”
“I found something. I think it belongs to someone here.”
The employee glanced at his torn coat.
“You can leave it at the desk.”
Thomas reached carefully into his inside pocket and brought out a gold locket.
“There’s a photograph inside,” he said. “I’d rather give it to its owner.”
Before the employee could answer, a man in a blue suit hurried across the lobby.
“Where did you find that?”
“Beside the bus stop.”
The man opened the locket. Inside was a tiny photograph of a woman holding a baby.
His expression changed.
“My wife’s,” he said. “She died last winter. Our daughter wore it to dinner here yesterday.”
Thomas nodded. “I thought someone might be missing it.”
The man introduced himself as David and offered him money, but Thomas gently pushed his hand back.
“I came to return it.”
“Then let me buy you lunch.”
Over soup, David learned that Thomas had spent most of his working life repairing furniture. Arthritis had made the work harder, and eventually he had stopped taking jobs. He still kept his tools beneath his bed.
“My daughter broke the hinge on her mother’s jewellery box,” David said. “Would you look at it?”
Three days later, Thomas sat at David’s kitchen table with the box laid on a towel. David’s daughter watched him fit a new hinge, asking questions until he handed her a screwdriver.
“You can tighten the last one.”
When they finished, she placed the locket inside.
At the doorway, David paid Thomas the amount they had agreed. Then his daughter called from the kitchen.
“Are you coming back? Dad says you know how to fix the chessboard.”
Thomas smiled.
“If he makes another pot of tea.”
On his next visit to the hotel, the employee recognised him and offered an apology.
“I should have listened.”
Thomas paused beside him.
“Yes,” he said gently. “You should have.”
Then he continued towards the dining room, where two people were saving him a seat.
