What happens in the video
An elderly man in worn gardening clothes and boots stands beside a colourful flower display inside a glass-roofed conservatory. A younger man wearing a light-purple suit approaches, and they have a tense exchange while formally dressed guests watch nearby. The elderly man holds a small item and gestures during their conversation. The clip ends before the situation is resolved.
Imagined story and continuation
Walter had promised himself he would only stay for a few minutes.
He wanted to see the conservatory’s anniversary exhibition, particularly the flowering tree near the centre. He had planted it as a young gardener forty years earlier.
But before he reached it, a man in a pale-purple suit stepped into his path.
“Excuse me. This reception is for invited guests.”
Walter reached towards his pocket. “I have an invitation.”
The man glanced at his dusty jacket and heavy boots.
“Perhaps you’re looking for the staff entrance?”
Walter’s hand stopped.
He had spent the afternoon helping a neighbour clear a fallen branch. With the bus due, there hadn’t been time to go home and change. He had thought arriving mattered more than what he wore.
“I’m looking for a tree,” he said quietly.
The coordinator frowned. Before he could answer, a woman from the conservatory approached.
“Walter? We’ve been hoping you’d come.”
In this imagined continuation, she explained that the exhibition included photographs from the conservatory’s earliest days—and Walter was in several of them.
The coordinator stepped aside.
“I’m sorry. I should have checked your invitation.”
Walter handed it to him. “You could have just waited while I found it.”
Together, they walked towards the tree. Beneath its branches stood a photograph of a young man kneeling beside a sapling, his sleeves rolled up and his boots covered in soil.
The coordinator looked from the picture to Walter.
“That’s you.”
Walter nodded. “My first week here. I was certain I’d planted it crooked.”
A little girl studying the display looked up.
“Did you know it would get this big?”
“I hoped.”
After the reception, the coordinator found Walter still sitting beneath the branches. He asked whether Walter would return to share his memories with the new gardening apprentices.
Walter thought for a moment.
“Will these boots be all right?”
The young man smiled sheepishly.
“They’ll be welcome.”
