He Asked Her to Repeat It—She Lost Her Patience

DailyHorizon October 27, 2026

What happens in the video

An elderly man wearing a light-coloured cap sits in a diner holding a menu. A waitress in burgundy leans towards him, points, and gestures during a tense exchange. He gestures near his ear and continues referring to the menu. Later, she reaches across the table, and a chef approaches. The clip ends while they are still speaking.

Continuation:

Tom could hear the waitress speaking.

He just couldn’t make out enough of the words.

The diner was busy. Plates clattered behind the counter, a chair scraped across the floor, and music played above the booths.

He pointed to the menu.

“Could you say that again?”

The waitress repeated herself, louder but faster.

Tom caught the price and missed the explanation.

“I’m sorry. Which one comes with—”

“I’ve already told you.”

He looked down.

Since his hearing had worsened, he had begun avoiding places he used to enjoy. Phone calls were difficult. Busy rooms were exhausting. Asking people to repeat themselves often felt like asking for something unreasonable.

But this diner had been part of his week for years.

He didn’t want to stop coming.

Tom gestured towards his ear.

“I’m having trouble hearing you.”

The waitress leaned closer, still speaking rapidly.

Other customers began looking over.

Tom’s breakfast suddenly felt like a test he was failing.

A chef came from behind the counter.

“What’s the question?”

Tom explained that he wanted to know which breakfast included the smaller portion.

The chef pointed to the correct line and waited.

“That one?”

“Yes,” Tom replied, relieved. “Thank you.”

The waitress looked at the menu.

The entire problem had taken less than a minute to resolve once someone answered the specific question.

She apologised.

Tom nodded, but added, “You don’t need to talk to me like a child. Just give me a chance to understand.”

The chef offered a quieter table. Tom chose to stay where he was.

His breakfast arrived, and he ate slowly while the rush settled.

Before leaving, he asked the waitress her name.

“Lucy.”

“Thank you, Lucy.”

He wasn’t pretending the earlier exchange hadn’t hurt. He simply wanted the visit to end as a conversation between two people.

The following week, he nearly chose somewhere else.

Then he returned.

Lucy recognised him and approached from where he could see her clearly.

“Same breakfast?”

Tom smiled.

“Yes. And tea.”

She pointed to the order as she wrote it, giving him time to confirm.

A month later, Tom brought a friend who also found noisy places difficult. They chose a quieter corner and stayed longer than either had planned.

At the counter, Lucy told the chef they might need another pot of tea.

He glanced towards the booth.

The two men were laughing about something neither could quite finish saying.

Lucy carried the pot over and waited for a pause.

This time, nobody had to struggle to be heard.
