Nina’s first reaction was frustration. They had been driving slowly through the forest, already behind schedule, when the animal appeared on the road.
Her sister told her to stop. Nina did, watching the large antlers through the windscreen.
For several seconds, nothing moved except leaves in the breeze.
Then a ranger approached from farther along the road and told them to remain back while he assessed the situation. Nina began asking how long it would take. Before he answered, a deep cracking sound came from the slope beyond the bend.
Dust rose through the trees.
The sisters fell silent.
The ranger directed them away from the affected area as other staff stopped approaching traffic. Loose material had come down near the roadway, and nobody yet knew whether more would follow.
Nina looked at the stretch they might have reached if they had continued driving.
Her frustration disappeared so completely that she felt embarrassed by it.
They waited at a safe location while the road was assessed. The animal moved away into the trees, leaving no explanation for why it had been standing there.
The ranger did not claim it had deliberately saved them. Animals notice things people miss, but nobody could read its intentions. What mattered was that they had stopped and then followed instructions.
Nina’s hands shook when she finally reached for her phone. She called the people expecting them and said they would be late.
For once, she didn’t apologise as though the schedule mattered more than the circumstances.
The road remained closed while crews worked. The sisters took a longer route once travel was cleared, arriving tired and unusually quiet.
That evening, they looked through the photographs from earlier in the day. Most showed ordinary scenery and arguments about who had taken the better picture.
Nina was grateful for every unremarkable one.
Weeks later, the route reopened. They returned to the area, staying on designated paths and following the current notices. At the visitor centre, they thanked the staff who had managed the closure.
Her sister bought a postcard showing an elk against the trees.
“You’re going to frame that, aren’t you?”
“Possibly.”
Nina laughed. She had spent much of their first trip watching the clock. On the second, they left space in the day for delays, stops, and places they hadn’t expected to enjoy.
The postcard went beside her desk, where she saw it every morning before opening her calendar.
