There Was a Drawing on the Back of Her Mother’s Card

DailyHorizon November 2, 2026

What happens in the video

A woman in a white blazer leans towards a hotel reception counter as a man in a navy waistcoat gestures across it. She steps back and examines a small card or paper in her hands. A second employee in black approaches and looks down at it with her. The exchange continues at the counter as the clip ends.

Continuation:

“It’s quite clear,” said Helen. “Mrs Bell. Room twenty-eight.”

The receptionist turned the card towards the light. The hotel’s name was printed in gold at the top, above a picture of the revolving doors behind them. He glanced at his screen again.

“I’m afraid our room numbers start at a hundred.”

Helen had spent the morning emptying her mother’s flat. She had put aside one biscuit tin to look through over lunch. Inside it, beneath a collection of foreign coins, was this hotel card. Her mother had often told her about spending a night here when she first arrived in the city. Helen had assumed the card named the woman who’d shared the room and hoped the hotel might pass along a message.

She was halfway through an indignant explanation when she saw the receptionist’s face. He thought she was asking to be given somebody’s current room number. She thought he was telling her that her mother had remembered it wrong.

“I’m making a mess of this,” she said. “Would it help if I showed you the other side?”

On the reverse was a little drawing of a girl in a station waiting room, asleep on a suitcase. Underneath, her mother had written *The night somebody came back for me*.

An older employee named Moira had joined them. She recognised the card stock. The hotel had used cards like that for guest messages. The name was the recipient. Room twenty-eight had become part of the breakfast room during renovations years ago.

“What’s under your thumb?” she asked.

Helen moved it. There was a tiny signature beneath the drawn suitcase. It read *Nell Bell*.

At home she searched the biscuit tin again. In a narrow envelope that had been stuck to the bottom was a letter. Mrs Bell had found Helen’s nineteen-year-old mother asleep at the station after a cancelled train. She had offered to share the twin room she’d already paid for. A week later she’d mailed her the sketch as a keepsake, along with a stern reminder to carry a little emergency money in the lining of her coat.

Helen laughed aloud. Her mother had sewn emergency money into the lining of Helen’s coat before her first trip away, and Helen had complained about the lump it made all the way to the station.

On Monday she went back to the hotel with a copy of the drawing for Moira. The receptionist remembered her immediately.

“Did you find your room?” he asked.

“I found the person who taught my mother to sew a tenner into my sleeve.”

He pulled up a chair at the quiet end of the counter. This time Helen started the story with the girl asleep on the suitcase.
