Original story
Chloe was jogging beside the river when Scout pulled sideways onto the grass. She stopped with one shoe just short of a metal utility cover. When she gave him slack, he could easily have gone around it. Instead, he planted his paws and barked at one corner.
“Why won’t you go forward?”
Ian looked up from his maintenance truck. “Don’t step on that cover!”
Chloe drew her foot back. From where she stood, the lid looked level with the path. Ian came over to show her what she couldn’t see from above.
Extension
The truck door swung shut behind Ian. One corner of the lid answered with a faint metallic tick. Scout’s ears tipped forward. This time, Chloe heard it too.
“The fasteners underneath have failed,” Ian said, setting down a cone. “Your weight on one corner could tip the other end up.”
A cyclist towing a child trailer was already coming around the bend. Chloe waved from the grass and pointed him toward the clear side. As the trailer rolled past, a little girl lifted her hand to Scout.
The following Friday, four bright bolt heads marked the corners of the repaired cover. Scout trotted straight across. Halfway over, he glanced back. This time Chloe was the one who’d stopped.
