Original story
On delivery day, Alex spotted a small silver handprint on the van’s rear door and reached for a buffing rag. Ellis covered the print with his palm.
“You promised me this door.”
Alex held the rag above the paint. Anyone collecting a freshly detailed van would notice that mark. Ellis took a framed photograph from the bench and turned it toward him. In the photograph was another van, another silver hand, and the same crooked thumb.
“My dad painted that hand on every van he built.”
Alex folded the rag and gave Ellis the keys. “Then it goes home with you.”

“Would you write it down?” Ellis asked.
Alex glanced at the photograph. “Your dad’s name?”
“On the service record. I might not be standing here next time someone washes it.”
Alex understood. He took out the delivery sheet and wrote beside the bodywork diagram, Original builder’s handprint on rear door. Preserve. Then he showed Ellis the entry before filing it.
Months later, Ellis brought the van back for a service. A new detailer worked his way around the rear door, cleaning right up to the silver fingers. Ellis started across the bay out of habit.
The young man looked up. “I saw the note.”
For the first time, Ellis handed over the keys without taking the photograph out of the glove box.
