He Stood Between Her and the Available Seat

DailyHorizon November 6, 2026

This clip shows the same bus confrontation and dialogue. A man blocks the doorway with his arms while a woman in an orange vest asks to use an available seat. Her leg prosthesis is visible. “Hey! You cannot sit there!” he says, followed by “Not until I say so!” and “Stop making excuses. Move!”

A bystander objects to his shouting. “Stay out of this!” he replies. The woman asks him to look at what she’s showing him, but he says it changes nothing. A uniformed man arrives at the door. The confrontation is still unresolved when the clip ends.

This version continues:

The driver asked the woman whether she wanted assistance. She said she could board if someone simply cleared the entrance. The man moved aside at last.

Once she was seated, she took a battered notebook out of her vest pocket. Across the top of a page she’d written FIRST FULL WEEK. Underneath were five little squares. Four had ticks in them. She drew a fifth.

The man who’d blocked her noticed the notebook as he passed. “Work?” he asked awkwardly.

“Yes.”

He began to tell her he hadn’t realized she was coming off a shift. She closed the notebook.

“I asked for the seat. That was enough information.”

He stood there a moment, then nodded. “You’re right. I’m sorry.”

At home, Nadia’s husband had made dinner and forgotten to turn the oven on. They ate cheese on toast while the casserole caught up. She told him about the bus. Halfway through, their son appeared carrying a certificate he’d made from printer paper.

BEST MUM AT GOING BACK TO WORK.

He’d left space for five stars. Nadia showed him the five ticks. He added a sixth star because, he explained, the first five were for the weekdays and the extra one was for letting him use the good markers.

On Monday she caught the same bus. The driver recognized her and greeted her by name. The man from Friday was already aboard. He shifted his bag from the seat beside him, then looked up as if checking whether the gesture was welcome.

Nadia chose a seat by the window. She wanted the light so she could finish a puzzle in her notebook. At the next stop another passenger boarded carrying two heavy grocery bags. The man offered his seat without looking toward Nadia for approval.

She saw it anyway.

At work that morning, a colleague asked whether the first week had been difficult. Nadia opened the notebook to the next page. There were five new squares waiting.

“Some bits,” she said. “But I’ve got a system.”

Tucked inside the back cover was her son’s certificate, already creased from being shown around. She smoothed it with her palm, put the notebook away, and went to collect her tools.
