What happens in the video
A man steps out of a white convertible beside a roadside barrier. A German shepherd moves along the barrier, drawing his attention towards the overgrown area below. The man gestures and looks over the edge while two people watch nearby. A pickup truck approaches, and another man joins him at the railing. The clip ends with them looking down; it does not reveal what they have spotted.
The story and an imagined continuation
The names, dialogue and events beyond the visible scene are fictional.
Daniel had stopped because the German shepherd wouldn’t leave the roadside.
At first, he thought it was lost. He opened his car door and called gently, hoping to coax it away from passing traffic. But whenever he approached, the dog hurried towards the white barrier, then turned to check whether he was following.
“All right,” Daniel murmured. “Show me.”
He peered over the edge. Brambles covered the slope, and sunlight flickered across the leaves. Nothing moved.
He was about to step back when he noticed something blue beneath the branches.
A bicycle helmet.
Daniel leaned closer. Below it, partly hidden by the undergrowth, lay a man beside a fallen bicycle.
“Can you hear me?”
A hand moved.
Behind Daniel, a pickup slowed to a stop. Its driver hurried over, followed by the two people who had been watching from farther along the road.
“Someone’s down there,” Daniel said. “Call for help.”
The dog stood rigid beside them, staring into the bushes.
While one bystander called emergency services, Daniel and the pickup driver searched for a safe way down. They found a gentler opening farther along the barrier and carefully approached the injured cyclist.
His eyes opened when the dog reached him.
“Buddy,” he whispered.
The shepherd lowered himself beside the man’s shoulder.
The cyclist, Peter, explained in broken sentences that he had lost control near the edge. His phone had fallen beyond his reach. Buddy had stayed with him before climbing back towards the road.
Daniel crouched nearby and kept talking until help arrived.
Later, as the rescuers carried Peter up the slope, Buddy followed every movement of the stretcher. He only hesitated when the ambulance doors opened.
“You can follow us,” a responder told Daniel, after arrangements were made for the dog.
Daniel looked at his spotless passenger seat, then at Buddy’s muddy paws.
“Come on, mate.”
Several weeks later, Daniel met Peter again on the same stretch of road. This time, Peter walked slowly with a crutch, Buddy close beside him.
“I never got to thank you properly,” Peter said.
Daniel bent to scratch the dog behind his ears.
“He did the difficult part. I nearly drove past.”
Buddy pressed against his hand, then returned to Peter’s side.
