An elderly man wearing a faded jacket and carrying a shoulder bag has a tense exchange with a suited employee in an elegant hotel lobby. As other staff watch, he searches his bag and takes out a folded paper. The employee gestures behind him, but the clip ends before the document is examined or the disagreement is resolved.
Continuation:
The man, Peter, had arrived for an afternoon reunion of former hotel employees. He had worked in the maintenance department for thirty years, but the receptionist assumed he had entered looking for casual work
“We’re not taking applications here,” the receptionist said.
Peter finally found the invitation.
“That’s fortunate. I’ve been retired for twelve years.”
A woman from reception stepped closer, read the paper and checked the event list. His name was there.
The young employee looked embarrassed. “I’m sorry. I should have asked why you’d come.”
“Yes,” Peter replied. “It would have saved us both some trouble.”
The woman offered to show him to the reunion, but Peter paused beside a wooden cabinet near the entrance.
“Still opens badly?”
She smiled. “The bottom drawer sticks.”
“Always did when the weather changed.”
Inside the function room, someone called his name. Peter’s face brightened as an old colleague hurried over, and soon they were laughing about leaking ceilings and wedding parties that never wanted to leave.
Later, the receptionist brought in a tray of tea. Peter waved him over.
“Come and meet the people who used to keep this place running.”
He pulled out an empty chair, giving the young man a chance to start the conversation again.
