He Thought the Delivery Man Was Walking Away

DailyHorizon November 3, 2026

What happens in the video

“You left her waiting outside!” A man beside a flatbed trolley confronts a delivery worker in an orange vest. An older woman is sitting on a bench nearby. “I’m getting the accessible ramp,” the worker says. “You don’t care about older people. Get the equipment,” the man insists.

A woman in green approaches. “Who stopped the delivery?” The man points to the worker. “He walked away from her!” She explains, “He’s bringing the safe ramp for her new mobility scooter.” The van stands open, with the ramp extending down to the pavement. “I thought he was leaving,” the man admits.

Continuation:

“Everybody seems to know an awful lot about me for people standing that far away,” the woman on the bench called.

She had a clear voice that carried beautifully across the pavement. Both men turned. “First of all, I asked to wait out here. My flat smells of boiled cabbage. Second, whoever has the instructions, bring them over. I paid for indicators and I want to see them blink.”

Her son, Jamie, carried over the booklet. His mother had spent three weeks choosing this scooter. She knew its turning circle and the exact height of the seat. What she didn’t know was whether the basket would hold the round cake tin she’d used every Friday for thirty years.

Jamie had been so busy arranging lifts for her since she stopped driving that he’d assumed her first outing would be a medical appointment. When she produced the tin from beneath the bench, he realized she’d planned something else entirely.

“Where are you going, Mum?”

“Rose has been bringing me groceries since February. I’m bringing her something for a change.”

The delivery worker unloaded the scooter, showed her the controls, and walked beside her while she tried it out. Jamie made himself stand still. At the corner she stopped a full yard short of the kerb, adjusted her hands, and tried the turn again. On her third go she drew up exactly where she wanted.

“Now,” she said. “About this basket.”

The tin missed fitting by the width of a thumb. Jamie saw her face fall. The worker turned the tin on its side as an experiment and immediately learned, from two generations speaking at once, that you do not transport a Victoria sponge vertically.

They compromised. Jamie would walk the cake over today. Next Friday his mother would bake a loaf cake. She drove beside him at a pace that allowed for every front garden she wished to inspect. At Rose’s gate she sounded the horn by mistake while reaching for the indicator. The sound brought three neighbors to their windows and Rose herself running out in slippers.

On his way home Jamie passed the van again. He stopped to apologize for the accusation. The worker accepted, then asked how the first trip had gone.

“Two streets in thirty-five minutes,” Jamie said. “She stopped six times to show people she could go somewhere without me.”
