An elderly man using a wheelchair sits at a supermarket checkout. His wallet falls to the floor, and he bends forward trying to retrieve it but cannot reach it. The cashier leans towards him during an apparently tense conversation while shoppers queue behind him. Another employee approaches near the end, but the clip stops with the wallet still on the floor.
Continuation:
Arthur had insisted on doing his own shopping that morning. After weeks of relying on his daughter, he wanted to bring home the ingredients for their Sunday lunch himself.
Now his wallet lay beside the wheel, and everyone seemed to be watching.
“Just a moment,” he said, trying once more to reach it.
The cashier glanced towards the queue. “Are you ready to pay?”
“I was. Until I dropped everything.”
An employee approaching from the aisle noticed the wallet.
“May I get that for you?”
Arthur nodded gratefully. Once it was back in his hands, he took out his card.
The cashier’s expression softened. “I’m sorry. I didn’t realise.”
“I don’t mind asking for help,” Arthur replied. “Sometimes I just need a chance to ask.”
She slowed down and packed his groceries where he could reach them. The woman behind him smiled as he carefully checked his list.
“Something nice for dinner?”
“My daughter’s favourite. She’s been cooking for me for weeks.”
That evening, his daughter arrived to find the table laid and dinner almost ready.
“You did all this?”
“Had a little help along the way.”
She offered to serve, but Arthur pointed towards her chair.
“Sit down. Tonight, you’re the guest.”
For the first time in weeks, he got to ask whether she wanted a second helping.
