One More Afternoon in the Workshop

DailyHorizon September 25, 2026

Noah stopped inside the workshop doorway.

His grandfather stood at the bench, brushing sawdust from his hands. Beside him, a sheet covered something tall and narrow.

“If this is another birthday bookshelf,” Noah said, “I’ve run out of walls.”

His grandfather didn’t smile.

“Your mother asked me to finish it.”

Noah’s mother had died that winter.

Behind him, his aunt caught her breath as he pulled away the sheet.

A wooden rocking chair stood underneath. Its arms curved smoothly into the back, and a small tag hung from one spindle.

THE CHAIR IS NOT THE SECRET.

Noah turned toward his grandfather.

The old man slid a tablet across the workbench.

Onscreen, Noah’s mother sat in the unfinished chair, wearing her familiar red scarf.

“Dad says the joints need another week,” she told the camera. “He said that last week, too.”

Behind the camera, his grandfather grumbled.

She laughed, and Noah gripped the workbench.

He hadn’t realized how much of her laugh he had forgotten.

The recording continued. She spoke about the chair she had wanted for Noah’s first home, then leaned toward the camera.

“But I asked him to make something else.”

His grandfather knelt beside the chair and released a small catch beneath the seat.

Inside was a shallow drawer filled with notebooks.

Noah recognized her handwriting.

Recipes. Family stories. The terrible jokes she used to tell while driving him to school. A page describing the day he was born, including how frightened she had been.

“I couldn’t write instructions for your whole life,” she said onscreen. “You never followed the ones about laundry anyway.”

Noah laughed through his tears.

When the video ended, his grandfather remained crouched beside the chair.

“She made me promise I’d finish.”

Noah sat down carefully.

The chair rocked once, then settled.

“Will you show me how you built it?”

His grandfather looked up.

“Tomorrow?”

Noah pulled a second stool toward the bench.

“Today.”
