A young woman kneels beside an older man lying on the ground next to a parked car with an open door. She keeps a hand near him and looks up at a uniformed man who gestures during an apparently tense exchange. Another uniformed woman approaches, with more people following from the nearby building. The clip ends before the man’s condition or the outcome is revealed.
Continuation:
Emma had been walking towards the entrance when she heard someone call for help.
An older man had collapsed beside his car. His keys lay on the pavement, and the driver’s door stood open.
She put down her bag and knelt beside him while another bystander called emergency services.
“Help is coming,” she told him, unsure whether he could hear.
A uniformed employee hurried over. Seeing the open car and people gathering, he began asking what had happened.
“Is he with you?”
“No. I saw him fall.”
“Then give us some space.”
Emma looked up.
“I will. But someone needs to stay with him.”
Their words overlapped. He was trying to establish control of the scene; she was frightened that, amid the questions, the man on the ground was being overlooked.
A second uniformed employee arrived and immediately asked whether medical assistance had been called.
“Yes,” Emma answered. “Someone’s speaking to the dispatcher.”
“Thank you. Tell me what you saw.”
Emma explained, this time without interruption. The first employee stepped back and directed the gathering crowd away from the car, leaving room for the arriving medical team.
When the responders took over, Emma moved aside. Only then did she notice how badly her hands were shaking.
The second employee retrieved her bag.
“Would you like to sit down?”
Emma nodded.
From the nearby bench, she watched the team assess the man and prepare him for transport. She still didn’t know his name. She wondered whether anyone knew he was there, whether someone was expecting him home.
Before the ambulance left, a responder thanked her for staying and giving a clear account.
The first employee approached the bench.
“I’m sorry I spoke so sharply.”
Emma looked towards the ambulance.
“I was scared.”
“So was I,” he admitted. “I should have listened.”
Several days later, Emma received a call through the contact details she had agreed to leave. The man’s daughter wanted to pass on a message: her father was recovering and remembered someone reassuring him before the medical team arrived.
His name was David.
A week later, with his agreement, Emma visited him in hospital. He was sitting beside the window, complaining mildly about the tea.
“You frightened me,” she said.
“I frightened myself.”
They laughed, and the awkwardness eased.
David’s daughter placed a small bunch of flowers beside Emma’s chair.
“He wanted to send something enormous,” she explained. “I told him you probably had to carry it home.”
David smiled.
“Thank you for not walking past.”
Emma glanced at him, then at the family photograph beside his bed.
“I’m glad you’re here to say that.”
On her way out, she finally allowed herself to believe the afternoon had ended well.
