Extended story
Anna kept one hand on her stomach and the other around two train tickets.
Beside her, her father leaned heavily on his walking stick.
They had been traveling since dawn. After a burst pipe damaged their rented home, Anna’s sister had offered them somewhere to stay until repairs were finished. Their remaining belongings were already on their way in a neighbor’s van.
All Anna wanted was to find the right platform.
But the conversation with the officer had become tense. Each time Anna tried to explain, another question interrupted her.
Then the station supervisor arrived.
“Let’s start with the tickets.”
She checked them, looked at the departure board, and turned back to Anna.
“You’re in the right station. Your platform has changed.”
Anna’s shoulders dropped with relief.
“I thought we’d missed it.”
“Not yet. First, let’s find your father somewhere to sit.”
The supervisor arranged assistance and brought them to a bench. With the pressure eased, Anna finally explained why they looked so disheveled.
The officer listened.
“I should have let you finish,” she said.
Anna nodded, too exhausted to argue.
Her father reached into his coat and offered her a slightly crushed packet of biscuits.
“You haven’t eaten.”
She laughed for the first time that morning.
“You’ve been carrying those all this way?”
“For emergencies.”
The supervisor stayed until assistance arrived, then walked with them toward the platform. Before boarding, Anna turned back.
“Thank you for helping us.”
“I’m glad you asked.”
Hours later, her sister met them at their destination. She took their small bag, hugged their father, and immediately began talking about the dinner waiting at home.
That evening, Anna found the biscuit packet in her coat pocket.
Her father had saved her the last two.
She placed them beside his tea and sat down next to him. For the first time all day, neither of them needed to hurry.
