Leah had asked a question about her bag.
That was how it started.
It had been moved from the compartment near her seat, and she wanted to know where it was before sitting down. Inside were her travel documents, phone charger and the small notebook in which she kept everything she needed for the trip.
The crew member thought she was refusing to clear the aisle.
“You need to take your seat.”
“I will. I’m asking where my bag went.”
He pointed towards the rear of the cabin.
Leah turned, but there were several open compartments and passengers still arranging their belongings.
“Could you show me?”
His explanation became sharper. Hers became shorter.
Then another crew member approached.
“Which bag are we looking for?”
“A small green one.”
The woman located it in a nearby compartment, where it had been moved to make space. She confirmed it belonged to Leah and helped her retrieve the things she needed.
The whole problem took less than a minute to resolve.
Leah sat down, embarrassed by how many people had watched. She hated that she had begun crying over a bag when it wasn’t really about the bag.
She was travelling home after spending weeks helping her mother recover from an operation. She was tired, worried and trying to remember whether she had left enough meals in the freezer.
The female crew member offered her water.
“Take a moment.”
Later, the male employee returned.
“I misunderstood what you were asking. I’m sorry for the way I spoke.”
Leah looked up.
“If you’d answered the question, I would have sat down.”
“You’re right.”
He did not add an excuse.
During the flight, Leah opened her notebook. Between appointment reminders, her mother had slipped a folded piece of paper.
You’ve looked after me. Now go home and let someone look after you.
Leah smiled through fresh tears.
When the plane landed, her partner was waiting with a sandwich wrapped in foil because he knew she would claim she wasn’t hungry.
She ate it before they reached the car.
“Long journey?” he asked.
“Long few weeks.”
At home, the cot was assembled, the washing was done and dinner was waiting. None of it solved every worry. It simply meant she did not have to manage the next hour herself.
That evening, she called her mother, who immediately asked whether she had eaten.
“Yes.”
“Properly?”
Leah looked at her partner, who raised the empty plate as evidence.
“Properly.”
For the first time in days, she put down the notebook without checking what needed doing next.
