She Worried About Scratches. Then She Put Down Her Keys.

What happens in the video

“Get down! You’ll scratch it!” A woman in a green dress has stopped her loaded shopping cart beside a silver car. A ginger cat is on the hood. It jumps down and sniffs near the front bumper. “What are you staring at?” she asks.

A man in a reflective vest hurries over. “Don’t start the engine!” She has the keys in her hand. “My car was parked all morning.” A pale cloud becomes visible near the car. “There’s an electrical short. Step away and call help!” The closing words are, “That cat found it first. I thought it just wanted food.” The cat is still in the parking lot as the clip ends.

Continuation:

From the shop entrance, Anita watched the ginger cat stroll beneath the row of shopping carts. Everyone else was looking at her car. The cat looked pleased to have the afternoon to himself again.

The store put her frozen food back in a freezer while she waited. By the time help arrived and the car was taken away, the ice cream had survived in considerably better shape than Anita’s nerves. She phoned her son for a lift. Halfway through telling him what had happened, she realized how close she’d come to turning the key with the cat underneath.

“I shouted at him about my paintwork,” she said.

“Did he seem offended?”

“He sat down and washed his foot.”

While her son collected the groceries, Anita went back to thank the employee in the vest. His name was Harvey. He knew the cat by sight and called him Marmalade, although the bakery staff called him Toast. Both names, he admitted, had been chosen before lunch.

Anita crouched a little distance from the carts. On the cat’s collar hung a narrow tag with a phone number. It took five minutes of patience and one extremely one-sided conversation before Marmalade allowed her to read it.

The woman who answered had been looking for an orange cat since a delivery driver left her gate open that morning. His name was Leonard. He belonged to her dad, who’d spent the last hour tapping a teaspoon against an empty saucer because that sound always brought him in.

“Would you try it?” she asked.

Harvey borrowed a spoon and saucer from the bakery. At the first tap, one orange ear appeared. At the second, the whole cat emerged, wearing the indignant expression of someone who’d distinctly heard a promise involving lunch.

When Leonard’s owner arrived, Anita recognized him. He was the quiet man from two streets over who put elaborate lights in his windows every December. He bundled Leonard into a carrier and asked whether she’d found him wandering.

“Actually,” Anita said, “I think he found me.”

On Christmas Eve, she took the long way home to see the lights. There were the usual stars, a slightly crooked reindeer, and one new figure in orange bulbs. A cat sat on the outline of a car, tail in the air. Beneath it, behind the real window, Leonard was fast asleep in the cardboard box the lights had come in.
