The Weight of an Emergency
Thomas stood beneath the awning, his heart hammering against his ribs.
Just ten minutes ago, his elderly mother had called him from her suburban home, her voice trembling and weak as she informed him that his son cannot breath and is in an almost emergency state.
Panicked, Thomas had used every executive privilege he had to summon a private cab to the curb.

“I called it. Please! I really need that cab,” a young man in a drenched green hoodie shouted, sprinting toward the vehicle. He looked exhausted, his chest heaving as water streamed down his face.
Thomas tightened his grip on the door handle, his own desperation rising. “So do I,” he snapped back, thinking of his fragile mother waiting for him.

He stepped closer, thrusting a clear plastic ziplock bag into the light.
Inside were a nebulizer attachment and a bottle of emergency liquid medicine. “I really need that cab. My son can’t breathe well,” he begged, his eyes wide with sheer terror.
Thomas froze. Looking into the frantic father’s eyes, he saw a reflection of his own panic.
He was caught in an impossible, agonizing vice—his own mother was suffering, yet this man’s child was on the brink of suffocating. In a split second, Thomas made the ultimate sacrifice.
