The Invisible Vapor
Clara was a highly successful architectural engineer who spent most of her long weeks managing complex, high-pressure downtown construction sites.

She lived on the fourth floor of a modern metropolitan apartment complex with her massive, beautifully trained German Shepherd named Rex.
Rex was normally an incredibly disciplined and quiet animal, rarely barking unless a stranger directly approached their private living space.
On this cold Tuesday evening, Clara walked down the carpeted hallway completely exhausted, carrying a heavy leather briefcase and her house keys.
As soon as she slipped her electronic keycard into the glowing slot, Rex threw his entire body against the door from the inside, barking with absolute, terrifying ferocity.
The heavy door burst open, and Rex instantly lunged forward into the corridor, pinning Clara squarely against the wall.
He planted his large, heavy paws directly onto her winter jacket, baring his teeth and barking loudly into her face.
Clara froze in utter shock, her heart instantly racing as she tried to push the powerful, panicked animal away from her chest.
“Stop! Stop it!”
Rex ignored her completely, snapping his jaws and standing up on his hind legs to block her from taking a single step forward.
He let out a series of echoing, deafening barks that resounded loudly down the empty, narrow apartment hallway.
Clara felt tears of frustration and genuine fear welling up in her eyes as she struggled to maintain her balance against the wall.
“What is wrong with you? Calm down!”
The dog continued to thrash around her, his claws scratching against the fabric of her coat as he forced her further away from the open doorway.
He seemed completely manic, his eyes wide with an intense, frantic energy that Clara had never witnessed in him before.
“What’s wrong with you?”
She screamed the words out into the hallway, her voice cracking under the immense emotional weight of the bizarre situation.
Suddenly, as Rex shifted his weight, a faint, sweet, and highly chemically scent drifted out from the dark apartment interior.
Clara sniffed the air, and her eyes went completely wide as she recognized the unmistakable smell of a massive, silent natural gas leak.
The stove valve inside had completely failed while she was away, filling the entire living space with a highly explosive, invisible vapor.
If she had walked inside and flipped on the electrical light switch, the entire apartment unit would have instantly exploded into a massive fireball.
Rex had smelled the lethal danger through the bottom crack of the door and was desperately risking his own life to keep her out.
Clara quickly grabbed Rex by his heavy collar, her anger instantly transforming into deep, overwhelming gratitude.
“Oh my god, Rex, you smelled it, didn’t you?”
The big dog stopped barking immediately, letting out a soft, trembling whine as he licked the cold sweat from her shaking hand.
“Come on, buddy, we need to run down the fire stairs right now and call the emergency services.”
They ran down the concrete stairwell together, bursting through the building’s main exit just as the loud fire alarms began to ring out.
Sitting safely on the curb outside, Clara wrapped her arms around her heroic pet, weeping quietly into his thick, warm fur coat.

“I promise I will never doubt your instincts ever again, my beautiful boy.”
