Zoe paused the birthday recording.
On the television, her younger self sat in a high chair, covered in icing.
“Go back,” she said.
Her father reached for the remote.
“I’ve got it.”
She rewound.
For a second, the camera passed a hallway mirror. A woman appeared in the reflection, holding the camera and smiling.
Zoe froze the picture.
It was her mother.
“You said she left before my first birthday.”
Her father didn’t move.
“She did.”
“Then why is she filming it?”
He stared at the screen.
For years, Zoe had pictured a woman who had packed a bag and disappeared without looking back.
Now that woman was laughing behind the camera while someone handed Zoe another spoonful of cake.
“She came back sometimes,” her father said.
“How many times?”
“I don’t remember.”
“Try.”
He switched off the lamp beside him.
Zoe switched it back on.
Her mother had struggled, he explained. There had been missed visits and broken promises. But there had also been afternoons he had stopped mentioning because he was angry, and because the simpler version had become easier to repeat.
Zoe looked at him.
“You let me think she never tried.”
“I was the one who stayed.”
“I know. You didn’t have to erase her to make me know that.”
He sat with that for a long time.
Over the following week, they watched every recording.
Her mother appeared in three.
There were no easy answers hidden in them. But there were moments Zoe hadn’t known belonged to her.
Eventually, her father found an old email address.
Zoe wrote a short message and saved it as a draft.
That night, she played the birthday video once more.
Behind the camera, her mother laughed.
Zoe let the recording continue.
