The Silver Swallow

DailyHorizon October 8, 2026

The boy emptied his pocket onto the bakery counter.

Four coins. A button. A little piece of blue thread.

“Is that enough for yesterday’s bread?” he asked.

The woman behind the counter glanced at her husband. Before either could answer, the boy added, “It doesn’t have to be soft. Mum dips it in tea.”

Behind him, an elderly man stopped reaching for his wallet.

“How many loaves?” he asked.

The boy turned. “Just one.”

“Make it two,” the man told the baker. “And something warm for him.”

He laid a banknote on the counter.

The boy stared at it. “I can’t pay you back.”

“You weren’t asked to.”

While the baker packed the bread, the old man pulled out a chair. The boy moved to sit, then froze.

On the man’s brown coat was a small silver swallow, its wings spread wide.

“Where did you get that?”

The man glanced down. “It belonged to my wife.”

The boy stepped closer.

“May I look?”

After a moment, the man unfastened the pin and placed it in his hand.

The boy turned it over. Beneath one wing was a tiny crooked star.

He touched it with his thumbnail.

“Mum’s has that too.”

The old man’s fingers tightened around the chair.

“What?”

“The star. She says her dad scratched it there because she kept mixing hers up with her mum’s.”

The bakery went quiet.

Many years earlier, the man had bought two silver swallows. One for his wife. One for their daughter, who insisted she was old enough for proper jewellery.

He remembered scratching the little star into the second pin at his kitchen table.

He also remembered the last thing he had said to his daughter.

If you leave with him, don’t come back.

At first, anger had made it easy to wait.

Then pride.

By the time he began searching, she had moved. The letters he sent came back unopened. After his wife died, he wore her swallow every day.

“What’s your mother’s name?” he asked.

“Anna.”

He sat down.

The boy looked worried. “Did I break it?”

“No.” The man swallowed. “No, you didn’t.”

He looked at the bread waiting on the counter.

“Your mum—is she all right?”

“She’s poorly. She said she wasn’t hungry, but I heard her stomach.” The boy lowered his voice. “I was going to tell her the baker gave us extra.”

The old man covered his mouth with one hand.

For years, he had imagined a reunion in which his daughter explained herself. Now he could think only of her sitting somewhere cold, pretending she didn’t need supper.

“Could you take me to her?”

The boy hesitated. “She doesn’t like asking for help.”

“I know.”

The baker handed them the bag. The old man paid, then followed the boy out into the rain.

Anna opened her door wrapped in a blanket.

Her eyes went first to the bread, then to the man holding it.

Neither spoke.

Finally, he said, “I should never have made coming home so difficult.”

Anna gripped the edge of the door.

Beside him, the boy lifted the silver swallow.

“I think this is ours, Mum.”

She began to cry.

Her father waited on the doorstep until she reached for his hand.

Then she let him in.
