Inside one of the homes, a woman stopped what she was doing and listened. The sound came again, this time from somewhere outside the upstairs window.
She walked over and looked out. At first, she could not see anything. Then she leaned forward and looked up toward the roof.
Their ginger cat was hanging from the gutter.
Both front paws were hooked over the metal edge. Below them, his body hung against the brick wall, while his back feet searched for somewhere to stand. Each time a paw touched the bricks, it slid away.

The woman called her husband.
He came into the room, followed her gaze, and moved closer to the window. The cat was only a short distance above them, but still beyond reach.

The woman stretched out a hand, then drew it back. There was no safe way to get hold of him from where she stood.
Above her, the cat tried to pull himself up. His front legs bent, lifting his chest toward the gutter, but he could not get his hind feet beneath him. After a few seconds, he slipped back down.
Her husband stepped away from the window and looked around the room.
Against the wall stood a wooden chest. He opened it and pulled out a thick plaid blanket, gathering the loose fabric into his arms.

While his wife stayed beside the window, he headed downstairs.=
He moved quickly along the narrow staircase, keeping one hand on the banister. At the bottom, he crossed the hallway, opened the front door, and stepped onto the pavement.
He looked up immediately.
The cat was still there, although his paws had shifted along the gutter. The woman stood at the open window below him, watching every movement.
A young man walking along the street noticed the elderly man looking toward the roof. He stopped and looked up too.
The older man unfolded the blanket and asked him to take the other side.
Within moments, the two men were facing each other beneath the window, each holding two corners. They spread the blanket between them and tightened their grip.
From upstairs, the woman called down instructions.
They needed to move closer to the wall.
The men took a small step forward, then another. They adjusted the blanket until its centre was beneath the cat.
Several people farther along the pavement slowed down. One stopped beside a doorway. Another looked up from across the street.
Above them, the cat scraped a back paw against the wall and briefly caught a narrow ridge in the brickwork.
He pushed against it.
His body rose slightly, and the woman watched as he tried to bring his chest over the gutter. For a moment, he seemed to be making progress.
Then his hind foot slipped.
He dropped back against the wall, still holding on with his front paws.
Below, the elderly man wrapped more of the blanket around his fingers. The young man widened his stance. Neither took his eyes off the cat.
The woman continued speaking to him from the window. He turned his head toward her voice, then looked down.
His body shifted sideways.

One front paw slid off the gutter.
For a brief moment, the cat hung from the remaining paw, twisting against the bricks. The men moved the blanket a little farther toward the wall.
Then the second paw came loose.

The cat fell.
Both men stepped toward him, keeping the blanket spread between them. He landed near its centre with a heavy thump, and the fabric dropped sharply under his weight.
The elderly man bent forward. Across from him, the younger man braced his legs and held tight.
The blanket stayed in their hands.
Together, they lowered it to the pavement.
The cat crouched in the folds, ears flat and eyes wide. Before he could scramble away, the elderly man knelt and gently gathered the blanket around him.
The woman disappeared from the upstairs window. Moments later, she came through the front door and hurried over.
She bent beside the blanket and reached toward the cat. He lifted his head and pressed it against her hand.
Only then did the two men release their grip on the corners.
The couple thanked the passerby, who helped the elderly man to his feet and held the door as they carried the cat inside.
That afternoon, they took him to the vet. After an examination, they were told he had escaped without a serious injury and could return home to rest.
By evening, the upstairs windows had been secured.
The ginger cat ate a little food, wandered into the sitting room, and climbed onto the elderly man’s lap. The plaid blanket was spread beneath him.
He turned in a small circle, tucked his paws under his chest, and fell asleep while the couple sat nearby.
