The Art of Doing the Right Thing

The Tourist’s Redemption

Marcus was a young traveler from a small town, visiting the big city for the very first time. Just the day before, someone had stolen his backpack at a train station, leaving him feeling bitter, cynical, and deeply untrusting of strangers. He was actively contemplating whether he needed to become hardened just to survive the city streets.

As he brooded over his thoughts, walking past a sunny sidewalk café, a woman’s wallet dropped directly in his path. He retrieved it, opening it to find a massive stack of cash. This was his chance to break even from his own loss. The city owed him, he reasoned. But looking at the woman’s peaceful expression as she drank her coffee, he realized he didn’t want to become the thief who broke someone else’s trust.

He approached her table and held out the black leather wallet.

“Excuse me, you dropped this.”

The woman let out a sigh of pure relief, clutching the wallet to her chest.

“Oh! Thank you! Seriously…”

She reached into the wallet to offer him a reward for his good deed. Marcus smiled, feeling his bitterness completely melt away.

“Wait, no, it’s okay.”

He walked away, finally feeling at peace with the city around him.

On the Ripple Effect

  • “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” — Aesop

  • “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.” — Princess Diana

  • “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” — Mark Twain
