The Call from the Lobby

DailyHorizon October 12, 2026

An elderly man in a worn coat faces a suited man in a hotel-style lobby. Their exchange appears tense, and a woman behind the reception desk reacts with concern. The elderly man takes out a flip phone and makes a call. The video then shows an elevator panel and the suited man looking alarmed.

Next Part:

Arthur arrived eleven minutes early.

He had spent the bus journey checking the invitation, though he already knew the words by heart.

Please join us at four. We would like to thank you properly.

He had worked at the hotel for thirty-six years.

Now, standing in the renovated lobby, he recognized almost nothing.

The old reception desk was gone. The carpet had been replaced with pale marble. Even the clock above the lifts had disappeared.

Only the faint smell of furniture polish felt familiar.

“Can I help you?”

The suited man sounded as though he hoped the answer was no.

“I’m here to see Mrs. Morgan.”

“Do you have an appointment?”

“Yes.”

Arthur reached inside his coat.

Before he could produce the invitation, the man glanced toward the entrance.

“Contractors use the service desk.”

“I’m not here for work.”

The receptionist looked up.

“Perhaps I could check—”

“I’m handling it,” the man said.

Arthur’s hand stopped inside his pocket.

“You’re the new manager?”

“That’s right.”

“Then would you call upstairs?”

“Mrs. Morgan is in a private meeting.”

Arthur looked at the clock on the wall.

“Yes,” he said. “I believe I’m late for it.”

The manager pointed toward the doors.

“You’ll need to arrange another time.”

Arthur took out his old flip phone.

The manager gave a short, impatient sigh.

Arthur dialed one number.

“Hello, Grace. It’s Arthur.”

A pause.

“I’m downstairs. Your manager says I can’t come up.”

The lift began descending.

The receptionist saw the floor numbers changing and quietly stepped out from behind her desk.

The manager looked from the lift to Arthur.

“You know Mrs. Morgan personally?”

Before Arthur answered, the doors opened.

Grace Morgan emerged carrying a framed photograph.

Behind her stood a small group of employees, several holding cups and plates.

“Arthur. We’ve been waiting.”

She stopped when she saw his expression.

“What happened?”

Arthur folded his phone shut.

“Apparently, I should have used the service entrance.”

Nobody laughed.

Grace looked toward the manager.

“This is Arthur Bell. He kept this hotel running for thirty-six years.”

The manager straightened.

“I wasn’t aware—”

“He asked you to call.”

The receptionist spoke before she could lose her courage.

“I offered to check.”

Grace nodded to her, then turned back to Arthur.

“Come upstairs. Your tea’s getting cold.”

The photograph showed the hotel staff outside the building twenty years earlier.

Arthur stood at the edge, holding a toolbox.

On the back, employees had written memories: boilers repaired before weddings, doors opened after midnight, a flooded room made ready before an exhausted family arrived.

Arthur read every message.

Downstairs, the manager waited until the gathering ended.

“I owe you an apology.”

Arthur studied him.

“Then give one to the receptionist too.”

The manager glanced toward her.

“She was trying to do her job,” Arthur continued. “You stopped her.”

He apologized to both of them.

Weeks later, Arthur returned for lunch.

A delivery driver stood near reception, looking uncertain. The manager approached him, listened, and made a telephone call.

Arthur watched quietly.

When the manager noticed him, Arthur gave a small nod.

That meant more than the framed photograph he had almost missed.
