Travel Complications Disrupt Swiss World Cup Plans
The Swiss national team’s preparations for the upcoming World Cup in the United States have hit an unexpected snag involving one of their most pivotal players. Breel Embolo, the talented forward who currently plies his trade for the Ligue 1 club Rennes, was conspicuously absent as the rest of the Swiss squad boarded their flight to the tournament host nation.
Embolo, who has built a distinguished career with stops at Basel, Schalke, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Monaco, remains a central figure for the Swiss team, serving as the squad’s fifth captain and representing a primary offensive threat.
The delay stems from a last-minute issue regarding Embolo’s travel documentation. According to reports, the forward’s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)—a program that allows citizens from participating countries to visit the US for short-term stays without a formal visa—was suddenly moved into a “further review” status just hours before the team’s scheduled departure.
While the association confirmed the authorization had been valid as recently as the morning of the flight, the abrupt change in status rendered him ineligible to board the aircraft.
The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has since engaged with the appropriate authorities to rectify the situation, expressing optimism that the administrative hurdle will be cleared promptly. In an official statement, the SFV noted that while Embolo could not travel alongside his teammates, the expectation remains that he will reunite with the squad in the United States either later today or tomorrow.
This incident is not the first time Embolo has faced legal or administrative scrutiny; his 2023 conviction for making threats following a 2018 altercation in Basel has previously garnered public attention. As the Swiss team settles into their tournament preparations, they must navigate this logistical frustration while hoping to have their star striker back on the training pitch without further delay.
