“Let’s go, Peter.”
They had spent an hour getting ready. Peter had struggled with his tie, and Eleanor had worn the green dress their daughter always said brought out her eyes.
Now neither wanted anyone to see them crying.
At the entrance, they had given their names twice. When the staff member couldn’t find them, he treated their explanation as an excuse.
Behind them, the younger woman hurried out of the ballroom.
“Where are the Martins?”
The staff member gestured toward the departing couple.
“They weren’t on the list.”
She looked at his tablet.
He had opened the suppliers’ list.
Across the ballroom stood two empty chairs beside a framed photograph of a young woman.

The evening’s fundraiser supported the community music program she had founded before her death. Her parents had been invited to hear its first scholarship student perform.
The organizer caught them near the doors.
“Please stay. There’s someone who’s been practicing for you.”
Eleanor hesitated, then turned back.
This time, the staff member approached them himself.
“I checked the wrong list. And I spoke to you badly. I’m sorry.”
Peter nodded. “Thank you for saying that.”
They reached their seats just as a nervous teenage violinist stepped into the light.
“This was your daughter’s favorite,” she told them.
Eleanor took Peter’s hand.
The first notes began, and for the first time that evening, they forgot who was watching.
