Peter had practised the request on the bus.
He would explain briefly, ask politely and leave if the kitchen was too busy. But standing opposite the chef, he found himself beginning in the wrong place.
“My wife used to make this.”
The chef glanced at the paper.
“We can’t prepare outside recipes during service.”
“It isn’t for today.”
The answer came too late. The chef was already explaining the restaurant’s menu, while Peter tried to find the words that would make him understand.
Then the owner entered.
“Peter? I’m sorry—I thought reception would bring you to the office.”
The meeting had been arranged. Peter was organising a small lunch for his wife’s birthday, and the owner had offered to discuss one special dish.
His wife, Anne, had been finding it harder to remember recent events. But she still talked vividly about the little restaurant where they celebrated their engagement.
That building was long gone. The recipe was Peter’s best attempt to remember the meal.
The chef’s expression changed.
“I didn’t know you had an appointment.”
Peter placed the paper on the worktop.
“I should have said that first.”
The owner left them to talk.
The chef, Luca, asked about flavours and texture rather than demanding exact quantities. Peter described what he remembered: lemon, herbs, potatoes that were crisp at the edges.
They planned a simple lunch, with no promise that a meal could restore what illness had changed. Peter only wanted an afternoon Anne might enjoy.
On her birthday, they sat by the window.
Anne watched the boats and asked whether they had been there before.
“Not here,” Peter said. “But somewhere like it.”
When the food arrived, she smiled at the smell.
“You always put too much lemon on yours.”
Peter laughed softly.
“I still do.”
For a few minutes, they talked about their engagement: the rain, his nervousness, the ring box he had dropped beneath the table. Later, Anne lost the thread and asked about the boats again.
Peter answered as though it were the first time.
From the kitchen doorway, Luca saw them holding hands across the table.
After lunch, Peter thanked him.
“Was it right?” Luca asked.
“It was lovely.”
He did not try to explain every part of the afternoon. Some moments had been difficult. Others had been unexpectedly bright. Both belonged to the day.
Before they left, Anne insisted on thanking the chef herself.
“Wonderful potatoes,” she said.
Luca smiled.
“Thank you.”
On the bus home, Peter put the recipe back in his pocket. It now included a few notes in Luca’s handwriting.
He thought he might try making it himself on Sunday.
